367 JOHN VAN REENEN Massachusetts Institute of Technology Brexit’s Long-Run Effects on the U.K. Economy ABSTRACT What will be the long-run economic effects of the United King- the economic impact of how the deal affects uncertainty and confidence. The main focus of our analysis is on how the government’s proposed Brexit deal is likely to affect the economy, leaving aside the effect it might have on uncertainty. Our assessment is that trade with the EU, especially in services, will be more costly after Brexit. As a result, Brexit will incur a permanent annual net loss between 2-5% of national GDP; from an economic outlook, it can be concluded that Brexit cannot be motivate. Moving outside the EU, UK will have to give up sovereignty in exchange for market access, and it will have to keep up and adopt harmonising legislation in exchange for market access.
